A couple of years back, I put a lot of thought into all the new things I want to learn and hobbies to build. Growing up, I had always been a person who loves to learn new skills and a jack of all. But I realized, from the time I moved to NYC,  I had stopped picking up new hobbies – busy job? random drinking/eating out over the weekends? so much to do in this city? :/

Time to build new hobbies!

Take 1: Summer 2014

  1. Decided to take up tennis classes since I enjoy watching the game so much
  2. Planned to go on a hike every sunday through summer

1. Bought 20 classes (10 from groupon and 10 from travel zoo) – yes! When I plan something, I go all in!

Took 1 class each at both tennis training centers – yay! I’m getting there!

2. June 8: (I still remember the date)

We drove to Upstate New York for our first hike for the summer. We decided on trying the Popolopen trail. The trail had a lot of rock scrambling and we thoroughly enjoyed it.  I completed the whole hike and at the last stretch, just when I was about to walk into the footpath (hike entrance) – oops! I tripped on a rock right at the entrance.

My left feet was swollen 3 times the usual size!  Doc visit -> 2 full ligament tears! Oh no! And with this, an end to both my goals for summer 2014 🙁

Nevertheless, I shall re-visit this plan again – 2017 perhaps?

Take 2: Summer 2015

Learning from my past mistakes, I decided that I need to have a more varied set of hobbies.  After a lot of thought, I concluded that its best to have 3 types of hobbies

  1. Something that keeps me fit
  2. Something I can pursue even if I break a leg somewhere down the line
  3. Something that can make money

My only criteria for choosing these hobbies is that it has to be a social activity (will go mad without people around me!)

  1. Yoga
  2. Billiards — love it, almost feels like meditation – getting better by the day and will keep at it
  3. Working on it! (multiple trial and errors)

2016

Continued with #1 and #2 and still going strong!

Still searching for #3. Will my side project be the solution to this?

Maybe my desire to learn new technical skills can itself be #3. I could also make it social once I gain expertise i.e build websites, analytics for NGOs, work with volunteers etc

Updates:

Billiards turns out to be a very expensive hobby! 😐

I’ve started writing regularly and am super keen on getting better at it – hope to write a book someday (genre finalized!)

I keep going back to my love for drawing! See Digital Art. My drawings still look like a 4 year olds, but i’m getting there!

A new side project – Uncork
